I paint because I enjoy carefully observing nature and life. Each painting is a personal journal entry of my life, marking a specific experience on a particular day and time. I enjoy calling attention to the mundane and commonplace subjects, because there really is no such thing. We often don't see the beauty or depth of emotion in everyday scenes just because we don't take time to really look. Through the art elements of line, shape, value, color and texture, I bring out the exceptional qualities of the daily scenes we take for granted.

My painting technique involves building-up areas of color and value through the application of thin layers of transparent color achieving a rich textured surface that is vibrant with color. I love to play with complementary colors, surprising the eye with the unexpected.

I begin most paintings from life but take reference photos for fine-tuning and finishing the painting in the studio. In the studio, I can step back from the immediacy of the life or plein air painting and address more academic principles of art.

I feel most alive when I paint. All of my senses respond and I feel pulled into something larger—- I get lost in the moment. Painting becomes a meditative practice for me.
